James Everett Stuart was born near Bangor, ME., March 24, 1852. In 1860, he migrated to California with his perants across the Isthmus of Panama and settled near Sacramento. He was educated in California schools and studied painting with private instructors. He completed art studies in 1881 under Raymond D. Yellard (1848-1900) at the San Fransico School of Design. Stuart made trips to Alaska in 1891, 1897 and 1907. In 1892 he set up a studio and gallery in Chicago, where he remained until 1912. In that year he returned to California, opening a large gallery in San Fransico, where he remained until his death.
